Hospital Stay

Pack Your Bags For the Hospital

Having a baby is the most exciting experience you will ever have, but it can also be one of the most overwhelming. This is why it is so important to make sure you get your bags packed for a hospital stay during the beginning of your eighth month of pregnancy. If your little one plans on coming early, you will be prepared for them ahead of time.

The first item on your agenda when packing is to have your paperwork ready to go and in the bag. This may include your insurance information, picture ID, and your birth plan. If you have eyeglasses, be sure you put them in the bag or be prepared to put them in at the last moment. If you have any special tools you plan to use in labor, such as a tennis ball, make sure these items are packed, as well.

When packing for your hospital stay, you will also want to think about what your needs are for the time you are away from home. The following is a list of personal items you will want to include in your bag:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hair brush, comb, and any accessories you need
  • Lip balm
  • Deodorant
  • Soap, shampoo, and conditioner

Your clothing needs are few, but you will want to bring the following:

  • Robe
  • Nightgowns
  • Slippers
  • Socks
  • Underwear
  • Comfortable and loose clothing to wear home

Next on your list of things to pack should be the items you will want to bring for your partner or labor coach. These items may include a camera, snacks, and even something to read. This is especially important should you have a long labor. Knowing they have something to keep them occupied will help you to relax better. The important thing is to ask them what they would like before you pack.

The items to include for your new baby are very few and simple: a blanket to cover the baby with when he or she goes home with you and the outfit you plan to put them in. The hospital is going to provide you with everything else you need for your newborn. In fact, you will probably be sent home with more than you expected, as most hospitals tend to spoil the moms and babies who are in their care.

Last, you will want to be sure you bring the infant car seat with you to the hospital. Many hospitals may require a quick inspection to be sure the seat meets the car safety laws. Not only that, should your infant have any health conditions when born, they may wish them to take a car seat test before leaving the hospital. This will ensure that your baby comes home safe.

The above information are generalized items you will want to take to the hospital with you. While you may want to add to the list, you will also want to be sure that you do not take any valuables to the hospital with you, including any jewelry you normally wear. If you require any special medications, let them know ahead of time and leave your own medications at home.
