Is There a Cure for Adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis is a disorder of the uterus which generally occurs in middle-aged women who have given birth. It can be asymptomatic, mildly uncomfortable, or cause extreme dysmenorrhea with long and heavy periods. There are several potential treatment courses, but some of them are intended only to treat symptoms, while others come with no guarantees. Unfortunately, at this point, there are only two real cures for adenomyosis.

For younger women who face many years with severe adenomyosis, a hysterectomy is generally the most recommended treatment option -- and the only immediate cure. A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. Because it is not necessary to remove any of the other reproductive organs (such as the ovaries), most of these women are still able to begin menopause normally.

For older women for whom adenomyosis does not interfere with everyday life, it may be possible to simply wait for menopause, the second of the “cures.” The estrogen naturally present in a woman, particularly during menstrual cycles, tends to act as a sort of catalyst for the development of endometrial tissue in the myometrium. Menopause tends to put a stop to this, and adenomyosis almost always disappears by the end of it.
