Natural Remedies for Indigestion

No one enjoys experiencing indigestion. This painful and socially awkward condition has many people avoiding favorite foods, eating antacids like candy or chugging bottles of Pepto-Bismol. Fortunately, there are several natural remedies for indigestion that can alleviate and even prevent symptoms.

Peppermint

For many people, peppermint oil can ease heartburn. Consuming mints such as Altoids, which contain a high percentage of pure peppermint oil, immediately following a meal can aid in digestion. Some supplement companies sell digestive supplements made with peppermint oil to aid digestion. A hot cup of peppermint herbal tea during or after a meal may also help to prevent or alleviate indigestion. As with all nutritional supplements, be sure to consult your doctor before trying supplements containing peppermint oil as this natural oil can have adverse interactions with certain prescription medications.

Citrus

Many citrus fruits add the body with digestion. For improved digestive health, eat a fresh orange at the end of every meal. To prevent indigestion, drink a cup of hot water mixed with one tablespoon of lemon juice prior to eating. Lemon-lime sodas are a popular folk cure for indigestion, but you can get relief in a healthier, more holistic manner by combining two teaspoons of lime juice, a pinch of ground ginger and a teaspoon of honey in a glass of warm water. Taken after a heavy meal, this concoction aids the digestive process.

Grapes

For decades, nutritionists have acknowledged a connection between grapes and overall digestive health. Munching on grapes between meals or enjoying them as a part of a meal on a regular basis has been known to eliminate indigestion and also help with stomach upset.

More Herbal Tea

Several herbs in addition to peppermint are known to alleviate indigestion. Blackberry tea and chamomile tea are two of the best teas for those who struggle with digestive issues. A little honey or lemon juice in your tea can aid digestion even further.

Ginger

Ginger by itself can be a powerful weapon against indigestion. Chewing candied ginger or other sweets that contain lots of ginger will help to eliminate digestive discomfort. Including fresh ginger in foods and drinks also has a beneficial effect on overall digestive health.

Indigestion is a painful but common problem. In addition to the above recommendations, those who suffer from regular heartburn should take care to get plenty of healthy fruits and vegetables in their diet. It’s also important to get good physical exercise on a regular basis. Those for whom digestive issues become severe or constant should see a doctor to discern if they are suffering from a serious health condition.
