Roughly 36% of all firework-related injuries affect hands and fingers, and more than 50% of all firework-related injuries are burns. When you put these statistics together, you might be able to deduce what type of fireworks are causing these injuries ... sparklers!
Though they are small and seemingly harmless compared to the explosives commonly seen on the 4th of July, sparklers are dangerous due to the high temperature at which they burn: 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. Since sparklers are so hot and typically hand-held, it’s understandable that these fireworks are responsible for the most injuries each year.
In 2013, a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission released an in-depth study on firework-related injuries. In it, the organization revealed that 2,300 of the 7,400 reported injuries from a single year were caused by sparklers, making them the firework most commonly associated with injury.
